Owen Pallett

A few years ago, a friend visiting from London told me to check out this band called Final Fantasy on his iPod. I was a bit turned off (because i didn't like the band name). But my eyes lit up when he said Final Fantasy is Owen Pallett "this dude who plays violins in Arcade Fire".

So I came home and read Owen Pallett's wiki page. Sounds quite impressive - Arcade Fire, Beirut, Grizzly Bear, Arctic Monkeys, Do Make Say Think, mika. And he even won a Polaris!

So here is a video of him covering No Cars Go. But we can't call it a cover because technically, he is/was in Arcade Fire. But still, this is good.

ps: no one should ever really attempt to cover arcade fire unless of course, you are arcade fire (or god).

Listening to Arcade Fire always brings me back to 2004/05.

Watched the Kings of Convenience with miss lilac Friday evening, with some of the other colours too..worsty was right next to me...held miss lilac's hands throughout the gig...told her it doesn't get better than that.

We love the KOC. The minimalism of Drake-esque guitar melodies, and polite irreverance of Morrissey-lyricalism. Floating above that all, vocal meoldies from two persons blending into a single voice and soul.

"Scrap moonlit dinner atop the Eiffel Tower. Scrap running through wild roses in an unpronounceable village in Denmark. I don't think it'll ever get more romantic than watching KOC live," I said.

She said "yes, i love you," and kissed me.

SOIL & "PIMP" SESSIONS

and last night the pimpers showed singapore one more time just exactly how close these brohters are.

the sweetmusic crew went down in full force to the esplanade to watch them last night, i guess this year's tours for them would be to plug their latest and fifth album already so far - Planet Pimp.

well last night, going way above and beyond expectations by most accounts, soil and "pimp" were a virtually inseparable assault of jazz improv and frantic punk rock stage intoxication, with beat styles from every possible nook and cranny of the universe of music exploding at the speed of a thousand million excruciatingly slinky bass hooks, the grand palace from which the princes of the horns tore their hearts out for the audience with every breath and every drop of sweat as they bickered in magical unison, contantly contantly watched over by the bishop of the keyboards and grand piano keys, the wizadry of sweet sweet omnipresence.

And of course, following in the fine Japanese tradition of perfectionism, soil and "pimp" 's President aka Shacho was always at hand to guide all learned and unlearned ears to every turn, dive, stop, jump and mind fuck moments in the songs, and to remind us all that was going on was really goin on and that we weren't dreaming.

till now i still can't define them. they call their stuff death jazz. i think it's even more than just death jazz. free flow death punk jazz rock orchestra doesn't even scratch the surface.

anyways, you guys know im not crazy over labels or genres.

but if i ran a music shop, i'd have to place their albums somewhere.

and i guess im just gonna have to put them under the SICK section.

About I Am David Sparkle

I Am David Sparkle started out as an improvisational band in 2001 and was one of the first bands to play instrumental and post-rock music in Singapore.

The band writes music that draws inspiration from life, love and beauty, and invites the listener to explore the depths of human emotion.

I Am David Sparkle was awarded “Best Alternative Act” at the 2006 Motorola Super Style Music Awards, and has shared festival stages with international acts such as Copeland (USA), Furniture (Malaysia) at BayBeats 2005,
Agrikulture (Indonesia), Jurassic5 (USA), The Beastie Boys (USA) at Good Vibrations 2007. At Recharge Revelation 5 Global Gathering 2007, they performed at the festival with artistes like Simian Mobile Disco (UK), Futon (Thailand) and Pop Shuvit
(Malaysia) amongst many others.

I Am David Sparkle comprises Amran Khamis and Djohan Johari on guitar, Farizwan Fajari on bass and Zahir Zanosi on drums.

The band released their new album in Malaysia last Saturday at the Recharge Revelation 5 Global Gathering 2007, “Europe's biggest dance music festival”.

General opinion regarding one Pete Doherty runs along the lines of 'fuck-up' and 'junkie scum' most of the time, but of course, general opinion is generally shaped by the manipulative entity that is the media. Gossip columnist, tabloids and swill mongers of similar nature will do anything to paint a picture with shades of pessimism to get copies off the racks, or to get their web advertising rate to appreciate.

Of course, there's the opposing camp insisting Doherty is a lyrical genius, arguing that the current pedestal he's set upon by conventional wisdom is angled incorrectly. Intoxication, after all, synonymous sometimes with certain schools of creative thought. Take Lester Bangs, Kurt Cobain, Hunter S Thompson, Jack Kerouac, and even Richey Edwards as examples.

Charles Bouledaire, whom often mused under the influence of Absinth and hashishe, once wrote, "in order to escape from the slavish martyrdom of time, intoxicate yourself; unceasingly intoxicate yourself; with wine, or poetry, or art - as you will."

In my personal opinion, Pete assures the latter group that their opinion holds more worth than that of Camp Swill with The Lost Art of Murder (soon to be released on the full-length "Shotter's Nation", to be released on the 1st of October for UK; 23rd for US).

He muses introspectively,

People hear a lot of things when listening to Battles. When they played at London's Luminaire last year, Plan B magazine's Frances Morgan's gig companion remarked to him that Battles sounded a lot like 70s prog-rock giants Yes. Part of him knew that the said gig companion passed this remark in jest, as a joke on the fashionable audience present and the band equally, as Yes, was in their time, good but undeniably laughable.

But part of him couldn't help but take the Yes comparison seriously. He could hear how Battles' web-like, note-filled instrumentals formed a weird Venn diagram between a number of genres, those acceptable and those 'unnacceptable'. Perhaps through this very process of obscuring what those genres or styles represent, so that we appreciate their form rather than focus on their extra-musical baggage.

one of the bestEST music i have heard in this quite new year has got to be albert hammond jr's debut solo effort.

album's titled yours to keep.

in case you havent know, albert hammond jr is actually one of the strokes' guitarists.

YEAH! the fuckin' strokes!

and we thought only julian can sing...

the songs are just jam-packed full of lovely melodies, kinda like surfer dude jack johnson going electric.

and the all too familiar wailing, jangily guitar sound that albert's been feeding us through the strokes is so distinct! this is dope shit!

HOME presents Dark & Dirty..
Beginning in 2001 on Gold Coast, Australia, the initial Dark n Dirty crew sought to bring a dance music event that was truly underground in sound and feel as Dance Music had begun to become rather commercial and popular. Events had lost there personal connection amongst party goers, artists and music so Dark n Dirty began with an objective to bring back this connection, focusing strictly on an undergroud sound that was still alive, but not being presented frequently enough.

Dark Tribally Progressive was the initial core of the Dark n Dirty sound with events being promoted via non mass means of media, where word of mouth was the most powerful asset. International Students seem to eat up the Dark n Dirty concept, so promotions began heavily focused on attracting this crowd and making them aware that a Dark n Dirty event was in the horizon.

Another key aspect to Dark n Dirty was the promotion and support of highly talented artists who were underground in sound and technically superior against the regular club DJ. These artists included Reza, Alvin K, Veiga, Timmy L and Aidan Rice to name a few, in which all have grown in stature on a national and international stage.

After a successful couple of years on the Gold Coast with guests including Phil K, Misja Helsloot, Chris Fortier and Jono Fernandez, Dark n Dirty was set to expand to Brisbane with more opportunity for growth to occur. Since this home base move, Dark n Dirty has thrown events around Australia, including Canberra and Sydney and with the departure of some of the original resident artists to their national countries, Dark n Dirty is now being thrown in Indonesia and China. This expansion through Asia seems to be the major focus of Dark n Dirty, with an idea of creating a truly underground Asian event. Malaysia, Singapore and Japan are next on the list of countries to enter and with residents holding high reputation around Asia it is certain that Dark n Dirty will continue to grow successfully, finding new artists and keeping the underground sound alive.

Ultimately if venues and clubs can work side by side with the Dark n Dirty concept, the realization of a united underground event for Asia is more likely and this thing called dance music, won't lose its identity and become commercialized like other forms of music.
