KEEPITLIKEASECRET
Founded by Zahir Sanosi in early 2005, “KEEP IT LIKE A SECRET” is the moniker that he adopts for his work, which ranges across multiple platforms involving illustrations and design for various artifacts of popular culture, including t-shirts and skateboards.
A creative concept that is based on learnings from life experiences coming mostly from his childhood, Zahir uses his art to bridge personal life, and the inspirations and visions that he wishes to communicate. Not limiting his ink work to any particular surface or medium, Zahir’s artpieces come with each their own story: works that whisper to the audience’s eyes, ears and hearts.
Being an avid fan of Stephane Blanquet, Jake & Dinos Chapman and other similar artists, Zahir’s work is at times controversial and contradictory as they are representations of the struggle between his beliefs as well as personal and public politics.
“KEEP IT LIKE A SECRET” brings the audience on a walk through a sinister ‘Alice in Wonderland’ world – where the almost childlike drawings give the initial impressions of ‘happiness’; but which, upon closer examination, rewards viewers with deeper and darker meanings. An altogether different take on storybook-like characters, Zahir’s works presents characters, personas and objects all morphed into a veneer of twistedness and imagery.
Constant appearances in forms of babies, beautifully sad girls, insects and rabbits all drawn in ways out of the norm can be noticed in “KEEP IT LIKE A SECRET”. Meant to confuse, impress, and question the minds of viewers, the drawings are inversions of what is considered safe, sane and real.
This is art that will not be easy on the eyes and remains proudly so. This is counter culture work that demands to have an impact.
Coming together for his second exhibition entitled SHHH…LOUDER PLEASE THANK YOU!, this will be a full showcase of Zahir’s work, that true to form, will mirror his lifestyle and current surroundings.
Zahir’s work is fused with passion and the heartbeat of underground counter culture, and it is with this that he has chosen to collaborate with close friends and other local independents, including:
SPEAK CRYPTIC - street artist.
ONE TWO DELTA – street artist
BEATNIK BABY - vintage online clothing store.
FRU FRU and TIGER LILY - clothing label.
Also active in Singapore’s underground music scene, this exhibition has also been given the support of his peers in respected bands/labels:
STRAITS RECORDS - independent music label and shop.
STITCH INITIATIVE AGAINST SWEATSHOP – an awareness campaign PLAINSUNSET - punk rock heroes
STONED REVIVALS - independent longtime cult band.
FORCE VOMIT – local indie/surf rock terror
I AM DAVID SPARKLE – instrumental/post-rock outfit
Come in and see what the secret is all about.
